Text description provided by the architects. 15 minutes away from Bern, up the river Aare towards the Alps lays the small village Rubigen. In the 1980s the house of the client’s parents was built, leaving half as an unbuilt plot to be developed by the next generation. In 2010, the planning of the project to build a new home for the family of four started.
The playground and the terraces are surrounded by a lovely garden and form the social area where the three generations meet, still providing some intimacy. In the south, on the other side of the house the rooms requiring more privacy like the bedrooms, the office and living room are situated. The open kitchen with the dining room on the upper level as well as the entrance area on the lower level, connect the private with the social areas.
In terms of efficiency the wooden house is made of prefabricated elements, which make a shorter installation time on site and the basement is reduced. The high energy efficient thermal insulation of the cladding lowers the costs of operation as well as the CO2 emissions and will be further improved by solar panels.
